From 1985 to 2001, we sailed on the Bermuda Star/Enchanted Isle out of New Orleans. We did our last voyage only one week before the Enchanted Isle was put out of commission and docked in Voilet. Had we known that it would have been our last, we certainly would have done everything we could to have helped the crew members who would be stranded for weeks/months after that as many of them had become like family to us. We sailed on her at least three sometimes four times a year in the last five years that she was in service out of New Orleans. We miss her greatly and often think of our family and what they are doing now and how they and their families are doing.

My first cruise was onboard the ss Volendam in 1983 (Brazil). We went from New York to Bermuda and met the Veendam (Argentina) in port and went over and had lunch onboard. I've always had a fondness for these two sisters. They say you always love your 'first.'

Absoloutely heartbroken that our dear ship is now being broken up into pieces in india i have visited some horrific websites about this awful place and read memoirs of captain's who call it "the place where captains weep" 45 year's old when she died but she will live forever in all our heart's.I had the happiest week of my life on my honeymoon aboard this ship in august 2000 and no ship breaker can ever rob me of these memories, but its still a heart breaker.

Although I never sailed on SS Argentina, I have sailed as a third mate,on a passenger ship called "Transilvania". She was built in 1939 in Germany and she was still a Grand Dame in 1969 when I have made two trips in the Mediterranean Sea.
I remember her sister ship, the "Basarabia", was taken by the Soviet Union Goverment after the WWII, as a war debt. Well, the rusians took more then a ship, they took our freedom, but this story is for another time. I have visited this site and I think you did a wonderful job. Reading the article in "Cotidianul" I could not belive the irony of this situation: a Romanian Captain taking an American ship on her last trip. United States used to have hundreds of merchant vessels and so did Romania. Now, the merchant fleet in both countries are nonexistent. Fate? Perhaps.

I watched her depart New York as a young boy. Standing by
the shore of the Narrows, I watched her elegantly simple lines pass by and take lucky people to exotic destinations
in a style all too forgotten on board today's modern cruise
ships. She was a lady...a lady with a long past of catering
to her clientele in a very classy and individualized way.

I was on a cruise on then Enchanted Isle in early November of 2000. I've been trying to find information about the ship off and on for over a year now. Thanks for the information about what's happened to her since our cruise. I hadn't been able to find any current information about the ship or cruise line. That cruise in 2000 was my first, and so far, only cruise. I loved the old ship, and it's classic lines. I've got many nice shots of the ship when it was still in good condition. I enjoyed reading the history and accunts of YOUR SS Argentina and the pleasant memories spent aboard. The 2 North Atlantic ocean crossing that I made on the previous SS Argentina [1942-1945] unfortunately were for a different intent and purpose. However, the recollection of those journeys is transfixed in my memory and a special respect and admiration for My SS Argentina remains. Our WWII unit was the 56th Signal Battalion, V Corps of the First United States Army. and our participation in the 1944 Assault on the continent of Europe is part of recorded history.

We travelled from Buenos Aires after graduation in 1952 on the ss "Uruguay Star" with 5 friends who graduated together. Is there a chance to have any information, pictures, etc. of that unforgetable trip. What a wonderful day this has been ....to see my beloved S.S. Argentina again. My brother and I were students at the American Community School in Buenos Aires. We first traveled to BA on the old SS Argentina in 1948 when my parents first went to BA. We made many trips on the Moore McCormack ships! But, the SS Argentina was our favorite. I only wish I would have found you site 2 weeks ago. I live in Chalmette, which is about 5 miles from her dock in Violet. If I had known that she was leaving for good I would have been there to say goodbye. I have had the privilege to cruise her 3 times from New Orleans as the Enchanted Isle. The larger ships are much more glamorous, but none of them have the class and personal touch that she had. I remember last year, my entire family met on the deck of the Carnival Inspiration as we were going down river to get a good look at her docked in Violet. My mother, grandmother, grandfather, sister, and myself actually had tears in our eyes as we passed seeing her in that condition. There were about 9 of us there and not a word was said as we passed her. She will definitely be missed by all who had the chance to experience her charm.

My first cruise was on the Enchanted Seas in November 1991 on its first sailing under Commodore. Over the years I sailed many times on both the Seas, the Isle and the Caribe. Met a wonderful person Karen Wilson, who was a hostess and Asst Cruise director on the Isle in the Mid 80's, great memories, great ships..GREAT web site!!!

Our first seven day cruise (3rd overall) was out of San Diego on her. Met the hotel manager for the 3 ship line that week. Also met bar manager Ron Delorusso that week and would rate that the best cruise ever. We sailed same itinery 14 mos later in 1992 with two daughters. Sailed her one more time in May 1998 out of New Orleans. What a great ship, she will be missed.

After seeing this great tribute to the Argentina, I had to find a model of her I built almost 30 years ago. My Grandmother purchased it for me to show me the ship she traveled to South America on in the early 1960's. I finally found it on Ebay-an original 1958 issue. It is sad to see yet another sleek old liner being sent to India for scrapping.

Today October 25, 2003 The S.S. Argentina, Enchanted Isle left the Violet port dock at 12:20 pm CST.
We got to watch her leave with Ginger and Bill as this great lady left port for her final time. She had her name painted over and was stenciled ( New Orleans ). She is on her way to India to meet the breakers. The ship had a crew of 28 on board. We got some great pictures and video of her leaving. We then raced down river and got to see her as she passed Caernarvon on the Mississippi River. It was great to meet Ginger and Bill. Too bad it was as the ship left to go to the scrap yard. Ginger and Bill got to board her one last time before she left. Ginger and Bill will be posting more as soon as they return home from their trip to New Orleans.

We have fond memories of sailing on the"Bermuda Star" from New York to Montreal and later from New Orleans on the "Enchanted Isle" on another cruise. We were part of a Canadian Naval Veterans group that had taken the original trip and the chap that had organized the original cruise had come up with the idea of a 10 year anniversary cruise and had located the "Enchanted Isle". On both trips we had some memoraable moments - on the Bermuda Star our luggage was misdirected to Newark Airport from Toronto and it was two days before it caught up with us - on the Enchanted Isle we had cabins on the upper deck and when we rounded the tip of Cuba, ran into rough weather and my wife was deathly sick.

Love your site. I remember as a kid in high school in Brooklyn, NY, I had a contact with Moore-McCormack in the
city and they loaned us a set of actual signal flags for
decoration at one of our theme dances. They also gave us
posters, napkins, stirrers,etc. Argentina/Enchanted Isle
was always a handsome ship - still is!!!! Too bad Norwegian
Cruise Line couldn't be talked into buying her for their
Project America cruise plans...they've bought the United
States and the Independence, why not Argentina???
My favorite ship SS America, or what is left of her, is on the beach in the Canaries on Fuertaventura Island. I am sorry to hear that Argentina may be going to Alalang.
Hopefully the sea may take her on the way over rather than
her having to suffer the breakers torch!!! Nice Job. Good Luck.

It wasn't until Murphy submitted his memories that I remembered it was he about whom I wrote in my earlier message. It is amazing how our memories get jumbled as we get older. I wish I could win the Megabucks and save the old girl. I guess the Argentina is why I don't go on cruises today. Nothing, absolutely nothing, can compare to the wonderful closeness the passengers had with the crew of the Argentina. The liners today are too big and too impersonal. Please someone save our fair lady from the breakers!

What a great site. It seems that 2003-2004 will see the end to many great true ocean liners. One by one they are departing to the breakers and now it seems to be the S/S Argentina's time. I guess it is the natural cycle of shipping and the Argentina is after all 45 years old, but the new mega cruise ships are just so boxy and ugly. If there were beautiful ships to replace the likes of Argentina, it would'nt be so sad to see her go.

My family left New York on the S.S. Argentina on March 13, 1964 for dad's tour of duty in Rio de Janeiro. Mom, dad, Pat, Kim and I boarded her and were immediately overwhelmed by her size and grandeur. It's funny how she looks so much smaller than I remembered her. I remembered her being so huge and awesome. We had so many fond memories from that cruise and it was so very special. At the age of 16 that was a big event in my life.

I had the pleasure of working as an entertainer on board S/S Argentina (s/s Bermuda Star) while she sailed under the flag of the Bermuda Star Line, in 1989. Cabin Class Collectibles came into being as a result of a model of the ship, which I built following my final voyage in her, so I indeed owe a great deal to her. I remember fondly her old woodwork and brass fittings, and conversations with her captain while sitting in the small bar at the base of her starboard uptake. I will always remember discussing the Titanic disaster with Helen Reddy, and watching Jennifer Holiday (who missed our San Diego departure) being hauled up the ship's side in a harness (while we were under way!) off Cabo San Lucas. My most memorable performance was a special concert we gave for the ship’s crew. I know that S/S Argentina will live on in the memories of all those who sailed in her.

Though I've only sailed on her once as the Enchanted Isle in 1999, I really fell in love with this ship. You could feel the history surround you.

I should tell you that the Enchanted Isle played a major role in my decision to change careers from the graphic arts industry to a travel agent.

Seeing the Enchanted Isle go the breakers is very sad. Maybe someone out there will make a last minute decision to save her from a fate worse than scuttling.

Your tribute to the ship is very touching. I can't recall seeing any web site quite like yours. Thanks so much for sharing a little bit of your life with us.

We haven't been down to Violet to see the ship since last year(Just drove by it).Wish there was something that could be done, but there are just too many cruise ships and budget cruise lines using old ships just don't fit in any more. What an incredible site!! I have been following the news on the Enchanted Isle and the Enchanted Seas since the demise of Commodore, and just found your site today (reading 'Maritime Matters'). I sailed on the Enchanted Seas in 1993, and fell immediately in love with the ships. Nothing at all like the Mega Ships we now see - the Brasil was just a relaxing, comfortable ship that served her purpose very, very well (and long). Thanks to the wonderful staff and crew from Commodore (Methe, Kim, Stewart and the Captain 'Singing Swede') and all of the wonderful people on the cruise. I will visit often - in the hopes of hearing of a reprieve for the old girls.

I served as an officer aboard the Enchanted Isle and her sister the Enchanted Seas/Universe Explorer, from 1994-1998. They are both lovely, graceful vessels and represented the highest standards in shipbuilding of their day. I first flew to Brazil at the age of 11 in 1957 with my family,but then I made at least two trips on either one of these boats (not sure which) from New York to Rio in approximately 1959 and l961. My dad was stationed in Rio as the Political Attache at the American Embassy, unti it moved to Brasilia. I attended EA for the last month of 5th grade (Sue Byrnes was my best friend.) through the end of 9th grade. Kenny Mertz was my classmate. I loved my memories of crusing on this ship too, even though I was very young. I remember the little hangout for teenagers, where you could get sodas, ice cream, burgers,and listen to the current "rock" music. I also had made a trip on the Delta Line out of Galveston, TX, to Rio (17 days!), but the USS Argentina and Brazil were much fancier. Thanks for the wonderful memories!

Hi,
I was at EA for the 4th & 5th grades, '56-58, and knew Kenny Mertz, Cito Bramen, Fritz Lash and a bunch of the other old timers. We travelled to and from Rio on the orginal SS Argentina, which had a black hull, and had served as a troop carrier during WWII. The two things I remember most about the voyages on the old Argentina were winnng the costome contest because my mother dressed me in drag with a sign that said "I dreamed I sailed on the SS Argentina in my Maidenform bra" from the 50's magazine adds. That was my first and last experience with cross-dressing. The other thing that stands out is the crush I developed on a 17 year old girl who took care of us (I was 9). I didn't know it at the time, but it seems I was getting a fairly broad introduction to one of the dominant themes in life.

I traveled on the SS Brazil from Rio to Trinidad in 1952 or 1953, with my parents and my grandmother. This was my first contact with the USA (and I must have enjoyed it, because many years later on I went to college in NYC - New York University - and became a lifelong US fan). I remember the ship as extremely comfortable and that trip remains one of the high spots of my childhood. For some reason I remember very clearlt a movie I saw on the SS Brazil, about John Philip Sousa. Perhaps it was the fact that my English was non-existent at the time and this was a movie that, being mostly about music, didn't require any great effort on my part...
